CSS with rhythm
I'm still digesting all the cool things I came across at SXSW. The last day I was there I went to a panel called Web Typography Sucks put on by Richard Rutter and Mark Boulton. I walked out with main points from their presentation:
- Use the proper characters to represent your meaning. “Quote things correctly” trail off properly… compute with the right symbols 1−3×2= etc.
- Compose your pages with a vertical rhythm.
- Use grids to build page layouts.
I wanted to try formatting this site using a vertical rhythm but quickly got frustrated with doing all the math. Being a programmer I decided to just put together a tool to create CSS with vertical rhythm.

Today was tons of fun but I'll go for a shorter list of highlights from today's events in bullet form:
- Seeing a really cool panel with a lady from Flickr and a guy Consumating about tags
- Learning how to J-fold a T-shirt
- Seeing two Tesla coils used to play the Super Mario Bros and Ghost Busters theme songs had to be a highlight
- Meeting Lady Ada, the inspiration behind my POV project
- Seeing a use for context free grammars... and beyond that seeing them used to generate some totally amazing artwork
- Spending more than an hour over the course of the day, talking with Etta on the phone trying to relate all the cool things I'd seen and missing her horribly
Quick wrap up of my first day at SXSW interactive
Etta reluctantly dropped me off at the airport this morning, it was really hard to say goodbye, it's the first time in months that we'll be apart for more than a day or two. After this I don't think I'll be taking any more than day trips without her. It's not nearly as much fun.
