i've got a deep fascination with iran, any time i see an article about it i'll read it no matter how mundane. today the nytimes magazine has a great piece on the iranian satellite tv stations broadcasting from the states and their role in moving the people there towards democracy.

it's no wonder that most americans don't trust the republicans with the environment. little bush is trying to shift payment for superfund cleanups from corporations to taxpayers. instead of a system that forces the companies that create the pollution to clean it up everyone has to pay for the actions of companies more concerned with profit than the people who have to drink their polluted water.

dude, so i went to dinner with my uncle, aunt and family, had a nice time and then went looking for my friends. they weren't at the park street show but jenny anderson said that dan had gone up to megan's house. i got on the phone and found out that not only was it true but that i'd missed a ride with bob and james.

so i pedaled my ass up the hill to megan and natalie's house off keystone. hanging out up there was was fun, except natalie's poodle sammi kept trying to hump me. it had a stuffed monkey that it'd been humping but natalie took it away because she was embarrassed by it. the poor dog was left with nothing to channel it's sexual frustration into but my poor innocent arm.

and channel it did, i was taking to raj explaining how hannah is an anagram (it's really a palindrome) and next thing i know her dog is humping the shit out of my arm. i shake the horny bastard off but never could shake off the feeling of violation. shortly thereafter i was able to convince james to give me a ride home. i've been showering like i was staring in the crying game ever since.

looks like bush's starwars isn't going as well as hoped. not that it's feasability is any more important to bush than it was to regan. at least regan seemed to undertand it was part of an elaborate poker game with the soviets, bush actually seems to think it's going to be protect americans. i sure the defense industry doesn't mind either way.

i'd like to make a correction, 66% of the cute girls at the stock exchange tuesday night were the ones we went over with. in my haste to belittle the stock exchange i made it sound like natalie, megan and their roommate who's name i still can't remember, dropped us off and left. not only did they give us a ride but i hanging out and playing connect four with them was the only enjoyable part of an otherwise boring night. apologies all around.

man this trip down to bishop has gone pretty well. we did a bit of bouldering at the happys yesterday with joe and some of the people he works with. real rock is so much nicer to climb on than plastic.

that night we had a group falafel feed and the a bunch of us went to mammoth to see spearhead (some kind of reggae funk band with hippy sauce seasoning). dan and i didn't have tickets and were planning to find an alternative means of entry. after examining several doors and getting told that sneaking in was impossible i was ready to give up, but not dan. he ended up talking to the guitar player of saul williams, the band that had just finished up. dan asked him if he could get us in and the guy said he didn't think so but along came the tour manager and told the band that if they wanted to come up and bring their friends he'd lead the way. long walk short: dan and i end up in the hospitality area drinking their free beer and watching the show. dan started talking to all the other people backstage telling them all kinds of crazy stuff about how he was doing video documentary work for geroge lucas. he had some marketing agent from a watch company convinced that he climbed with chris sharma all the time, she started talking about sponsoring him.

i wasn't expecting much from spearhead but they did a pretty decent job and the price was right. i got to dancing with this girl and was going to get ride with her so i could stay for the end of the show. i couldn't find her after the show so i started asking around. the best i could do was rovana about 12 miles north of bishop. i got up at 8 this morning and started walking, i picked up a ride into bishop and then started the 4 mile walk out to the research station where joe is living. i made pretty good time, i was actually back before everyone woke up.

crap it's started raining so this might turn into drinking not climbing day.

funerals, weddings, new babies. all the milestones make you realize how old you really are. seeing relatives you grew up with's kids who are now an age you remember. it makes the older relatives seem a little younger.

seeing what went into my grandpa's funeral i'm ready to write down a few guidelines for my own. first no talking about god. i'm dead, that's it stop trying to say i've gone to a better place. second i want a wake not a funeral, cremate that body and put the mayonnaise jar with the ashes and a photo up on a table, and open up the bar. offer up a toast and anyone that starts crying should be shown the door. relate some stories of the stupid stuff i've done. my grandpa did his 4 years in the army air core and 20 in the army reserve so he got a 21 gun salute and taps. taps i liked, that song gets me a bit choked up even with out someone dying.

my uncles and their friends are going to be coming up to reno next weekend. i'm looking forward to spending a night out hitting all the slummy bars in downtown with them.

driving down i thought about how cliche it is to start a movie returning home for a funeral. i wasn't exactly returning home but for the purposes of mentally casting yourself in the role it was close enough. seeing my cousin that's two months older with her two daughters. drinking beers with my uncle. seeing my grandfather looking like a wax model at the funeral home. it still hasn't hit me but when i see other people crying it gets to me. watching my grandmother working through it, that hurts. when i think about it, the death of my brother is probably the only thing that hit me immediately. almost everyone else i'm pretty detached from. it'd be an abstract concept, just another person that i haven't seen in a while.

i've been given my grandfather's truck. at first i wasn't really into it but as i've been thinking about it it works out really well. i want to move up to portland after school lets out. this will make getting up there doable and the really great thing is that in oregon you can register a vehicle on a month to month basis. so drive it on road trips all summer and then let it sit parked all winter. this is the first time i've been stoked about having a car in a few years but it's a shitty way to get one.

i think that the fight between percy schmeiser and monsanto is one of the most important warnings of what patenting genetic code will lead to. monsanto is suing him for patent infringement after his fields were found to be growing plants that contained their patented dna. schmeiser claims wind blow pollen from neighboring fields is to blame, monsanto says it doesn't matter how it got there he needs to pay for it.

i hate to say that the level palestinian/israli conflict has gone up a notch, it's easy to see this a business as ususal.

highlights

Two employees in the office of Terje Roed-Larsen, the United Nations special coordinator for the Middle East, were hurt by flying glass when windows in the building were blown out, a United Nations spokesman said. Mr. Roed-Larsen expressed outrage at the use of heavy bombs near civilian areas and United Nations offices, and emphasized that "Israel's security needs will not be met by hitting civilian targets or by destroying the Palestinians' ability to police and maintain order," a statement from his office said.
that's the truth but the israils don't seem to hear it
Dore Gold, an adviser to Mr. Sharon, called the introduction of the Qassam 2 an escalation. "Israel has said many times that if these rockets were used, it would change the rules of the game," he said.
okay as long as you're throwing rocks and we can strike back with our $14 million attack helicopter, there's no problem. however if you're going to start shooting missles made in a machine shop and we'll have to use our tanks and $9 million jets to maintain the status quo.

here's a good article about the unmanned aerial vehicles that were operating over afghanistan. one quote that illustrates why the air force is slow to replace pilots: [i guess i lost the link to this article]

Is this really "combat?" asks one long-time member of the manned aircraft community. "If the president is asked to help somebody and you send a couple of robots, have you really answered the call?"
uhmm, hey isn't the goal of a military action to achieve your goals with a minimum number of casualties? so if you can "answer the call" and not get anyone killed, it the means is less important.

for the last couple of days i've been meaning to post links to some of the commentary about the effects bush's speech has had on the reform movement in iran. what from here looks like standard right-wing lets restart the cold war so i can get my missile defense (legacy?) rhetoric is take completely differently in iran and korea. it seem more than singling out sponsors of terrorism bush has singled out countries that are capable of and have shown an interest in developing long range missiles.

yesterday on npr they had a piece on the change of our support of columbia's military. now instead of the "war on drugs" we're going to start paying for the columbian military to protect occidental petroleum's 500 mile long pipeline. god it must be great to be an oil man now, that million bucks you put toward w's campaign is coming back to you to the tune of $98 million.

as for my comments the other day about being okay with the cold, well i think i'm pretty much sick now. sore throat and fever last night. feeling a little better tonight but not going to do any drinking for a couple of days.

i'm helping my dad get a website setup for deford bailey, the musician he wrote a book about. it's really rough right now but coming together. this morning i got a chuckle when i open a letter from him and found printouts of ten different websites.

last night i went out to the bar with hee and jeff from my work. we went to the pub and sub, it was a real trip because i hadn't been there since i was 18 or so. we hungout talking to some lamo sorority girls for a couple of hours and then went up to the flowing tide. jeff is some kind of regular there, all the waitresses knew him by name. i met this really cool girl who works at java jungle and i ran into some people that i hadn't seen in a while. played a little pool with shawndor (i have no idea if that's how he spells his name) and talked to kelsey tannor. she's got a kid and husband now and strangely enough is looking a whole lot hotter than when we were in high school together. i got way too drunk and the guy who was going to give me a ride home got too drunk to and gave me 10 bucks for a cab. i woke up with my shoes on this morning, needless to say it wasn't a pleasant day.
